Sad face
Dude! I totally lost my first icon challenge - in the very first round! My jaw literally dropped because I seriously didn't think my icon was that bad... actually, I really liked it. They said it was "disqualified" and it took me a whole 2 minutes of wondering what comm rule I could have violated before I figured out they meant I was voted out of the competition. I thought the icon was a nice change from all the other entries too - vibrant where the others embraced the duller colors. But people REALLY disliked mine! (comments here) What do you think? Is it really that horrible?

It doesn't look bad to me. I really like it!

You're welcome.

1. I like how you comment and congrat the winner.
2. Phew, I went to the comm. and mann those are critics at its best-blunt-ness, if I may say. I'd be running with tears and lock myself up in the attic for a week until someone can bring me down from sadness-o-phoria.
3. What was the reason of disqualification? Apart from the critics that was given particularly on yours.
4. How many are there in the kstewlims panel?
5. Was this your first time entry to the comm.? Have you ever enter icon challenge? Have you ever won?

PS: You might not remember me, as I failed to respond to my lj-friends' entries lately, but I friend you from twilightmanips. :]
e_transitionse_transitions on February 24th, 2010 02:24 pm (UTC)
2. haha - thanks. Yeah, I was pretty shocked by so many blunt comments of how awful it is.
3. I'm pretty sure they disqualify you based mostly upon the votes from the other members - so I think it was basically just because I received the most criticism
4. Not sure, they only have 2 mods. But, again, I think they mostly base it on the votes of all the other entrants
5. Yup very first time ever - into any icon challenge. I entered a couple others at the same time I entered this one that are still waiting to be judged... hopefully those go a little better :)

And of course I remember you, you little lurker :P hehe

2. I guess that's what you call constructive criticism *shrugs*
3. Other members. OIC.
4. Aha yes, I checked it and yes 2 mods.
5. Oh, please do share the result. If I'm lucky enough to have internet when you post it, and I didn't miss your post--I'd like to know how it is.

PS: Hm, yeah. I'm silly lurker, lol. Sometimes I dunno what to say/comment when visiting an lj-friend's page. I guess I have to learned to at least say hi. That is appropriate, isn't it? lol.
e_transitionse_transitions on February 25th, 2010 03:13 am (UTC)
haha - I know what you mean! Sometimes I'm at a loss for what to say on friend's posts too. I try to throw in the occasional smiley face as a comment just to let people know I'm there :P

Pardon the question (i'm not very familiar with the concept of LIMS)
So, you are disqualified, means you're not able to enter challenge 2 of round 1?
But able to register for round 2 (if open next)?
e_transitionse_transitions on February 24th, 2010 02:31 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I think that's how it works. I got kicked out after round 1.1 and now they're on round 1.2, which I can't enter. once they reach the end of all the competitors, they'll start over again with round 2.1 and then everyone can re-enter again. You even get passes that you can use to skip a round if you don't like the subject material or something... but I never thought to use mine so early on (although, I think you might actually not be allowed to use it on the 1st round). I really liked the idea of the competition, so I might enter again for 2.1 ... but I'm a little worried I shouldn't even bother. Looking over the other entries again, it seems like they all sort of share the same style in their icons. The coloring is all relatively similar and there seem to be mostly the same types of crops... I'm sort of wondering if I'd always get eliminated right off the bat because my icons wouldn't 'fit in' with everyone else's. And if their votes are what count in the end, then not being in the norm isn't really the way to win.

*reading and nodding in comprehension*

1. I was thinking "what is passes?" and then oh...lol. IC, IC.
2. Re-enter for R2. Yeah I think you should. And I'm tot. salute you on your willingness to re-enter.
Had it been me, I'm still at the attic, lol. So go! Re-enter and win! Be the last one standing! I'm gonna wait for your news.
3. I have an lj-pal too, that's so consistent in entering manipulation challenges, and won couple of times. I think there are more merits than disadvatages to enter challenges as it gives you constr.critics--bluntly (still cringes, lol). I can't make 'pop' icons, yknow whamsayin? Popular icons that will be favored by many people and used. So entering a challenge alone compared to someone like me, is already a feat in itself, don't you think?
4. "then not being in the norm isn't really the way to win. "
Goodness so true. I think maybe if we're able to see how the past winners and entries are, then we'll get a notion of the comms. idea/definition of a 'winner icon', yes? I'd like to see how/what your decision would be: be relatively idealistic still or... follow the stream?
e_transitionse_transitions on February 25th, 2010 03:23 am (UTC)
2. oh, I'm definitely still cowering in the attic a bit, but I'm optimistic that I'll get over it by the time they get through the rest of the 1st set of rounds. I have a really bad memory :P hehe
3. yeah, I get what you mean. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I really make pop icons either. *lightbulb* that could have been a good thing to realize earlier :D You should try entering some yourself though. I know I can't say they've been uber fun for me so far, but still... at least it's a challenge to your creative juices to come up with something in response to a prompt rather than just something you make on your own.
4. hm... I dunno. I kinda think I'd still make them my way because, in the end, I make icons that I like - for me. If I don't like the end result, I end up dumping it. So, I can't see myself submitting something I think is crap and being like "oh well, maybe they won't notice it sucks because at least it fits in with the style of stuff they make"
Reese (aka. Jaidanwolf)dreamrequiem on February 24th, 2010 11:50 am (UTC)
Wow, I don't know what they're problem is. I think it's a perfectly nice icon. Much prettier coloring and quality than some of the others they kept in the running.

Of course, some people you can just never understand their choices. To each their own...in some cases, to each their wtf own lol.
e_transitions: LOL: gummybeare_transitions on February 24th, 2010 02:36 pm (UTC)
lol - thanks for that! It's nice to hear I'm not completely out of touch - I was really wondering: "wow, have I totally sucked all this time and no one bothered to tell me?"
Mizramizra on March 1st, 2010 01:00 pm (UTC)
I think it's pretty, But most of the icon challenges are pretty picky. It's fan-based and whatever is the popular theme, color, catchphrase of the day... usually ends up being the best. That's not always the case, but it's true 90% of the time.
I would say the coloring, the yellow-tinting of the skin, isn't flattering, that's true. I would have added a bit more sharpening and maybe went with a theme of a color, not so much as saturation in spots. It's a great start, though. Really! I was in the Robstills Lims and flunked out the first round, too. No worries. ;)
e_transitionse_transitions on March 1st, 2010 06:51 pm (UTC)
wow - seriously?!? You make such great stuff! I can't believe you'd get booted at all - let alone right from the start! Thanks for the input! See, that's what I consider constructive criticism - it helps give me tips of things to work on in the future. I've been watching the rest of the rounds at the lims and all the criticism seems to be contradicting. You know, one person says an icon's too boring, another says it's a great use of negative space. One says it's too oversaturated, the other says the colors are perfect. Oh well, at least it's still fun to make stuff to prompts every once in awhile ^_^
Mizramizra on March 2nd, 2010 11:43 am (UTC)
True! lol, the likes and dislikes are very contradictory of each other. It's just how things are, really. Not much you can help there. Just keep trying and don't always make work that others would find awesome. Pave your own road in design. It's the only way to get anywhere. And most of the time, it will take a long time before anyone notices, too. :) No worries, hon!
